PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University announced Sunday it will begin the process of rebranding as “BYUtes,” following recent comments from Provo Mayor Marsha Judkins reminding residents, “This wasn’t our land, we came in and took land, right?”
University officials reportedly spent several minutes reviewing a map before concluding she had a point.
“We recognize that simply acknowledging the land is no longer enough,” a BYU spokesperson said. “We must also acknowledge that ‘Cougars’ was a missed branding opportunity.”
The university’s familiar cougar mascot will reportedly be phased out in favor of a new mascot officials described only as “more historically appropriate,” pending approval from three committees and the Honor Code Office.
BYU officials emphasized that tuition payments will still be accepted despite the university’s uncertain claim to the property.
When asked whether the land would actually be returned, administrators clarified that the rebrand should be more than sufficient.
