Controversy Erupts After LDS Church Successfully Trademarks “Christian”

The internet erupted Tuesday after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reportedly approved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ trademark application for the word “Christian.”

Within minutes, pastors across the country were reportedly placing emergency calls to their attorneys, while Christian bookstores began hastily covering merchandise with masking tape until licensing requirements could be clarified. Several denominations also announced temporary name changes while awaiting legal guidance, including “The Formerly Christian Church,” “Followers of That One Guy from Nazareth,” and simply “Church.”

Kirton McConkie, the law firm representing the Church, celebrated the decision.

“We appreciate the USPTO recognizing our client’s longstanding investment in the Christian brand,” a spokesperson said. “Organizations wishing to continue using the term may apply for a standard licensing agreement. Discounted rates are available for nonprofits.”

The Church has not announced when enforcement will begin, though sources say cease-and-desist letters are already being printed.
