New LDS Meetinghouse in St. George First to Feature Pickleball Court Instead of Basketball

ST. GEORGE, Utah — A newly completed LDS meetinghouse in St. George is reportedly the first to replace the traditional full-size basketball court with dedicated pickleball courts.

Church officials say the change reflects evolving recreational preferences among members, particularly in areas where a cultural hall is now statistically more likely to host a doubles match than a pickup game.

“Cultural halls are being reimagined as inclusive, equity-focused spaces promoting belonging across ages and abilities,” said a Church spokesperson. “Pickleball reflects that direction.”

The new layout includes permanent pickleball lines, lowered nets and expanded seating for ward members waiting to rotate in, while still preserving enough floor space for wedding receptions, ward dinners and folding-chair emergencies.

Local leaders say the pilot has already been well received, especially among members over 50, several of whom reportedly arrived before the building was dedicated to reserve the court.
