SALT LAKE CITY — Utah officials reassured residents Tuesday that the state’s expanding network of Flock cameras will only be used to catch drivers cheating in HOV lanes.
Officials said Utahns should not be concerned about the cameras recording license plates and tracking vehicles across the state, because the information will only be used for the specific purposes officials currently have in mind.
State leaders also dismissed concerns about “mission creep,” noting that governments have historically been very disciplined about acquiring new powers and then resisting the temptation to find additional uses for them.
If the program ever does expand, officials said any changes would likely happen gradually enough that most residents will have plenty of time to get used to them.
For now, officials emphasized that law-abiding Utahns have nothing to worry about unless they drive somewhere.
Meanwhile, transportation officials say an increasingly common response from motorists has been to look directly at the cameras and say, “Flock you.”
Officials said they are aware of the trend.
