SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched an internal investigation after discovering that Sparkling ICE, a popular zero-calorie beverage widely consumed by members, contains green tea extract, an ingredient not in harmony with the Word of Wisdom.
An official familiar with the matter said the Church is “deeply concerned” about the scope of the issue, citing reports that up to half the Relief Society in Utah County may have unknowingly sipped themselves into technical noncompliance.
While leaders acknowledge that many members were unaware of the ingredient, a Church spokesperson clarified that intent is noted but not determinative. The spokesperson added, “Members are accountable for what they consume, even if the label is vertical, microscopic, or printed in a shade of obedient pink.”
Those who have consumed Sparkling ICE repeatedly, knowingly or not, are being asked to meet with their bishop to discuss next steps in restoring worthiness.
Additional guidance is expected in the next Worldwide Leadership Broadcast.
