SALT LAKE CITY—As the phrase “Hold my beard” continues gaining traction across Utah, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have issued new guidance encouraging members to avoid what they described as “the resonance of evil.”
While emphasizing that the phrase itself is harmless, the guidance notes that, when spoken quickly, it can sound remarkably similar to “Hold my beer”—a resemblance officials say is best avoided whenever possible.
“We’re simply asking members to pause and consider what others might think they heard,” the statement read. “The Spirit often speaks in a still, small voice, and we’d prefer it not have to compete with avoidable phonetic ambiguity.”
The Church suggested alternatives including “Please safeguard my beard,” “Would you mind holding my facial hair?” and simply waiting until both hands are free.
At press time, Utah men had reportedly begun replacing the phrase with “Hold my mustache,” prompting an emergency meeting to determine whether that was somehow even worse.
