SALT LAKE CITY, UT — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has officially announced the release of its newly rebranded hymnbook: Thymns.
The new Thymnbook is being heralded by progressive members and former members of the church, widely known as exmos, for its gender-inclusive language.
“It’s about time the church makes space for me… even though I have no intentions of ever going back to church,” said one ‘pronouns in their bio’ ex-member.
What’s Changing?
Church officials say that while the spirit of the songs remains intact, subtle yet significant edits have been made to foster inclusivity across the pews. Changes such as:
- “Praise to The Man” → “Thoughts for the Cis-Male”
- “Faith of Our Fathers” → “Faith of Our Non-Birthing Parents”
- “Rise Up, O Men of God” → “Rise Up, O Humans with a Recommend and a Willing Heart”
It’s also worth noting that songs mentioning Israel have been removed from the Thymnbook in order to build a safe space for the Hamas supporters within the church.
Not Without Controversy
Not all members welcome the rebrand.
“Who is this even for? asked a longtime, full-tithe-paying, devoted member of a Centerville ward. “We’ve been taught for so long to live by The Family Proclamation to the World. I would expect this kind of crap in Holladay… but not here. Those Salt Lake County pronoun weirdos can take a hike… and take your Thymnbook with you!”
Many fear this is just the beginning of a very slippery slope, and that next, the Church will release a gender-neutral Doctrine & Softer Covenants.
One Church official told Deseret Pews that they’re reportedly reviewing scriptures for “potentially exclusionary language,” including any reference to Jesus being Jewish or expecting anything from members beyond a vague affirmation that “Jesus is Love.”
When?
Zaints – sorry – SAINTS, can expect the new Thymnbooks to hit Deseret Book and church pews sometime this month.
