In a move that stunned subscribers and delighted the six people still following Mormon satire, YouTube legend Luke Nichols of Outdoor Boys fame has officially retired from viral content creation to become a full-time staff writer at Deseret Pews.
Nichols, whose channel boasts over 15 million subscribers and features everything from solo survival challenges to gutting fish with his bare hands, says the transition to niche religious humor was a natural one.
“After years of eating bugs in the wilderness and sleeping in snow caves, I just felt spiritually prepared to write headlines about ward potlucks and bishopric releases,” Nichols said, while workshopping a piece titled “Ward Campout Ends in Revelation and Rabies.”
The YouTube star cited the intense pressure of fame and a growing desire to cover “what really matters” as the driving force behind his decision.
“There are only so many times you can outrun a bear before you start asking the big questions,” he said. “Like why the Gospel Doctrine teacher always asks for volunteers and then ignores them.”
The Deseret Pews editorial board released a formal welcome via headline: “YouTube Star Joins Staff of Interns, Burnouts, and Former Gospel Doctrine Teachers.”
“We don’t have health insurance or a marketing budget,” the statement read, “but we do have strong opinions about sacrament bread texture, and that’s the kind of journalistic environment Luke thrives in.”
Nichols says readers can expect his first investigative series next week: “Elders Quorum Activities: Are They Even Real?” followed by “Primary Pianist or Vigilante? One Sister’s Double Life.”
Asked if he’ll miss YouTube, Nichols offered a heartfelt farewell:
“If you loved watching me start fires with flint and steel, wait till you see what I can do with a slow news week and a half-functioning laptop.”
